How airport car rental works

In-terminal desks

In-terminal desks sit inside or beside arrivals. Follow airport car rental signs after baggage reclaim; some airports place major brands in a shared hall.

Airport rental centres

Airport rental centres are often a short shuttle ride from the terminal. Your booking voucher usually states whether pickup is at the terminal desk or a rental centre.

Shuttle or meet-and-greet pickup

  • Shuttle pickup is common for off-terminal depots. Confirm whether the transfer is included in the offer.
  • Meet-and-greet services arrange collection from a representative or designated meeting point and are not available with every provider.

Flight delays and vehicle return

  • Add your flight number when requested so the supplier can monitor delays.
  • Check the offer’s opening hours and rules for delayed or after-hours collection.
  • Read the return instructions for the correct terminal, parking area, fuel level and key-drop procedure.

What to check before booking

  • Pickup method — terminal desk, rental centre, shuttle or meet-and-greet.
  • Desk or depot location — confirm the meeting point on the voucher.
  • Opening hours — especially for late arrivals and early returns.
  • Deposit — amount, hold type and whether a credit card is required.
  • Payment-card requirements — many suppliers reject debit cards or prepaid cards.
  • Fuel policy — full-to-full, pre-purchase or other terms.
  • Mileage — unlimited or capped daily/total kilometres.
  • Cancellation — free-cancellation window and no-show rules.
  • One-way fees — if you plan to return the car to another airport or city.

Your booking confirmation shows whether collection is at an in-terminal desk, a separate rental centre, an off-airport depot or a meet-and-greet point. Follow the airport signs and check whether a shuttle is required and whether the transfer is included before you travel.
Add your flight number when the booking form requests it so the rental company can monitor your arrival. If your flight is delayed, contact the company using the details on your voucher. How long the car is held depends on the location’s opening hours and late-arrival policy.
You will normally need your physical driving licence, booking voucher, passport or another accepted photo ID, and a payment card in the main driver’s name. Some destinations or suppliers may also require an International Driving Permit, proof of address or return travel details.
Most rental companies place a security deposit or authorisation hold on the main driver’s card. Some accept debit cards, but additional documents, a return travel itinerary or a larger deposit may be required. Check the payment and deposit conditions of the individual offer before booking.
Often yes. Select “Return car to a different location” and enter the return airport when searching. Availability depends on the route and rental company, and a one-way fee may be included in the final price. Confirm the return location before completing the booking.
Check the final offer for taxes, airport charges, mileage, fuel policy, basic coverage, cancellation terms and any optional extras. Child seats, additional drivers, enhanced insurance and one-way fees may cost extra. Compare the total price rather than relying only on the daily rate.
Search once your travel dates are known, particularly for peak periods, smaller airports or a specific vehicle class. An offer with free cancellation lets you secure a suitable car while continuing to compare prices. You can also track the search if you are not ready to book.
