Driving is often cheaper for shorter trips, especially when several people travel together. Flying can be more competitive for longer routes, solo travelers, or when airfares are low.

The better choice depends on your route, dates, number of travelers, current flight prices and driving costs. Enter your trip above to compare the actual options for your journey.

Driving may make more sense when

How the comparison is calculated

We combine current search results with route data and a small number of clearly marked estimates to compare the real cost and door-to-door travel time of each option.

  • Current prices

    Flight fares and rental car prices come from the search for your selected route and dates. Prices can change before booking.

  • Driving costs

    Fuel is estimated from route distance, vehicle fuel economy and country-average fuel prices. If you choose a rental car, its current price is added.

  • Flying time

    We use the flight itinerary plus airport time and, when available, travel between the city and the airport.

  • Tolls

    We can detect toll roads, but we do not add a toll amount unless you enter one in Advanced options.

  • Travelers

    Flight costs are calculated for each traveler. Many driving costs are shared, so the number of people can change which option costs less.

  • Missing data

    If a value cannot be calculated reliably, we leave it out and show the limitation instead of treating it as zero.

Flight and rental car prices are provided by Skyscanner. Fuel estimates use country-average prices from OpenVan. Road distance and driving time use Mapbox route data.

The calculator is designed as a planning comparison rather than a final quote. It combines search prices and route data with clearly identified estimates such as fuel cost and airport time. If something cannot be calculated reliably, we show that limitation instead of treating the missing value as zero.
Flight costs usually increase with each traveler, while many driving costs are shared across the vehicle. That means adding travelers can reduce the driving cost per person and sometimes change which option is cheaper. The calculator uses the number of travelers when comparing the two options.
For your own car, the calculator estimates fuel cost using the route distance, fuel economy and available fuel-price data. If you choose Rental car, an available rental price is added to the driving side. Tolls, parking or overnight stays are included only when you enter an amount in Advanced options.
The calculator can detect when a route uses toll roads, but it does not automatically add a toll amount because reliable toll pricing is not available for every route. You can enter a toll cost under Advanced options if you know it. An unknown toll amount is never treated as zero.
Flying time is more than the time in the air. We use the flight itinerary, add airport time, and include travel to and from the airports when those road connections can be calculated. The default is two hours before departure and 30 minutes after arrival, applied to each direction of the trip, and can be changed under Advanced options.
The comparison uses the flight price found for your selected route, dates and travelers. Optional airline charges such as baggage fees are not included in that fare unless you add them in Advanced options, so the final booking price can differ. Always confirm the final price with the provider before booking.
Yes. Select Rental car under “Drive with” and the calculator will use available rental car pricing for your route and dates as part of the driving comparison. You can switch back to My car at any time.
We do not substitute missing information with zero. If fuel pricing, airport ground travel or another value cannot be calculated reliably, the result shows the limitation and leaves that value out of the estimate.
Yes. Choose One way or Round trip at the top of the calculator. The selected trip type is used for both the flying and driving sides of the comparison.
Yes. Flight and rental car prices are a snapshot of the search and can change with availability, demand and provider pricing. The calculator uses the prices available during the comparison, but the final booking price should always be confirmed with the provider.
